Design - Phase II

1. Scope of Project

  • Goals
    • To train all WMS teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a SMART Board and SMART Notebook software, so they can make informed decisions about delivering instruction.

  • Audience - All WMS teachers
  • Design Time & Milestones
    • Summer 2009 - Conduct pilot group training for Module Two
    • Fall 2009 - Train the trainers
    • Winter 2010 - move to new building - MS Technology Team will preform OJT for Module One as needed
    • February 2010 - Survey staff to determine skill levels
    • March 12, 2010 - In-service Day
      • Conduct training on Module Two for all staff at Basic or Below Basic Skill Levels
      • Pilot Module Three training
    • Spring 2010 - Peer observations
    • Summer 2010
      • Continue Module One & Two training as needed focusing on laggers and new hires
      • Roll out Module Three training
    • 2010-2011 School Year - Continue peer observations and add formal observations by building principals

2. Delivery

  • Content
    • Module One - This training will cover the knowledge and skills practice needed for teachers to operate a SMART Board at a proficient level.
    • Module Two - This training will be an introduction to SMART Notebook software. The content of this program will consist of knowledge and skills practice in using the work area, tool bar, properties tab and page sorter tab. Participants will be given time to adapt a worksheet/activity that is currently taught using an overhead projector, for use with a SMART Board. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of SMART Board toolbar. Participants should save their worksheet as a PDF prior to attending training session.
    • Module Three - The content of this module will consist of knowledge and skill practice in using the attachment tab and gallery tab. Participants will be given time to create a student centered lesson. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of SMART Notebook Software and/or completion of Module Two training
  • Method
    • Module One: OJT
    • Module Two & Three: Face to Face, Instructor Lead In-service with an emphasis on hands-on training
  • Training Time
    • Module One: as needed
    • Module Two & Three: initial training = one 6 hour in-service day, OJT as needed
  • Constraints - Prior to January 2010, the biggest constraint is lack of access to proper equipment.
    Other constraints include:
    • lack of time for training
    • contract restrictions/limitations on the work day
    • attitudinal

3. Objectives

  • Terminal Objective: When appropriate, WMS teachers will choose to use a SMART board to deliver instruction to students, instead of a traditional overhead projector.
    • Module One - WMS teachers will be able to operate a SMART board, at a proficient level, in their classrooms, for the purpose of delivering instruction to students.
    • Module Two - WMS teachers will be able to use SMART Notebook software, at a proficient level, for the purpose of delivering instruction to students.
    • Module Three - WMS teachers will be able to create interactive SMART Notebook lessons, for use with their students.

4. Materials

  • Participants will have access to Hands-On Practice Guides, Assessment Checklists, Training Videos and Training Documents through Moodle, the district's course management system.
  • Slide presentation will be developed in Notebook software.

5. Who is involved

  • B. Hartranft - Trainer & Instructional Designer
  • J. Rothenberger - Secondary Technology Coordinator
  • MS Technology Team Members - OJT Trainers
  • M. Smith - MS Principal

6. Administration & Evaluation

  • This training program will be administered through the district's in-service program.
  • The designer will be responsible for reviewing data and updating training material.
  • Evaluations will include the district's in-service reaction evaluation form, a pre and post training skill survey, and an informal peer observation.
  • Participants will be held accountable and evaluated by the MS principal through formal observations.
